Gathering logs

Thanks to the efforts of park ranger Alex with the Hampshire City Council, we have acquired some more wood for our project! These logs and cross sections came from Netley Commons northeast of Southampton.

Lime, ash, aspen & pine wood donated by Netley Commons.

This assortment of wood includes seasoned ash (Fraxinus sp.; log furthest from viewer) and lime (Tilia cordata; log nearest viewer on right and cross section on top), and green Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris; cross section on bottom) and aspen (Populus tremula; pale log on left). Although aspen wasn't originally part of the project design, it's best not to let sleeping logs lie!

Close-ups of the cross-sections of lime and pine wood from Netley Commons.
We have quite a bit of seasoned and green oak from Butser, along with some more pine, but the hunt for good waterlogged wood for our experiments continues...
